One of the things I love about home decor is the chance to create something out of items I already own.
I find that when I take a minute to go through my drawers and cabinets and storage, I often discover things I forgot I have!
So, instead of heading out on a shopping trip, I try to train myself to go shopping at home first. It’s amazing what you find.
Last week, I was taking down my Easter table decorations, but wanted to replace them with something reminiscent of spring. I kept a couple of my flocked bunnies on the fireplace mantle, but the dining table needed a little something different.
After rummaging through one of my cabinets, I came up with a simple covered vegetable bowl that rarely gets used. It’s a basic off-white ceramic piece, so I thought it would make a good neutral vessel for a flower arrangement.
A transferware pattern like the blue floral shown below would be beautiful, too!

While I love real flowers, using them isn’t always realistic. Ours won’t be in bloom till June at the earliest, so I went with some faux versions in yellow and white (I’ve been in a yellow and white mood this spring).

I placed a foam block in vegetable bowl and added the flowers. Then I covered the foam with some preserved moss. The green in the moss is the perfect accent to the blooms. Then I set the arrangement on a stack of some green books and laid the lid to the side.
All in all, it took about 15 minutes – not bad!

Then I went to work on my ubiquitous boxwood candle rings. I swear, I’ve been using these since Valentine’s Day!
I replaced a few of the yellow blooms with white ones and added a glass candle holder (from Dollar Tree) with a small clay pot (from Walmart). Inside the clay pot, I added a small tealight candle (battery operated and on a timer, so it turns on and off by itself).

The candle is propped up on some floral foam which is camouflaged with some more preserved moss.

Together, they give our dining table a garden-inspired spring vibe. The forsythia wreath in the background adds another pop of that cheerful yellow (which is welcome on our many gray spring days!).
I got the wreath from Joann, which (sadly) we all know is going out of business. You can get a similar one from Michael’s, as shown below.

Before long, we’ll be swapping out our spring blooms to celebrate Memorial Day. Until then, we’ll enjoy our happy yellow and white flowers!
