While I don’t do a lot of decorating for Valentine’s Day, I do like to spread a little love around the house. It’s a way of brightening things up during winter, whether that’s with a romantic wreath, cute table setting, or some other creative decoration.
And, it gives me an excuse to head to the craft room! This year I’m working on a couple of projects, including this easy Valentine’s Day candle ring.
This candle ring was one of those true evolutions. I didn’t plan to craft a candle ring, it just sort of happened, which is the story with a lot of my projects. Here’s how it went down.
The Materials
I purchased some inexpensive faux boxwood wreaths on Amazon, thinking I might hang them on some mirrors. When they arrived, though, I started thinking they would make good candle rings.
So, I started pulling Valentine’s Day decorations from my stash and playing around. I had recently purchased some faux roses at Dollar Tree and those looked really good against the green of the boxwood. (You can get similar ones on Amazon, like the ones featured below).
Then I decided to use another Dollar Tree deal – a short strand of battery-operated heart lights.
I wish I’d purchased two of these strands, since I ended up making two candle rings. That’s what happens when you buy things with no plan for how you’re going to use them – you don’t buy enough and then they run out of stock!
Fortunately, I had some fairy lights on hand that I was able to use for the second ring and they look just as sweet.
Craft Time!
That was all I needed for the candle ring, aside from some craft wire. So, I started by fluffing up the boxwood, which was a bit flat from the shipping.
After fluffing, I wove the lights through the greenery, hiding the wire as much as possible by tucking it under the leaves. I also used some of the faux berry sprigs provided with the wreaths to help conceal the wire.
Next came the roses. I decided to wire them in place instead of using glue. While glue works really well, it’s also permanent, and I like being able to remove and reuse things, so wire it was.
I simply pierced the backs of the roses with pieces of wire and then attached them to the ring. I made sure the wire went underneath the greenery so it would be hidden and wouldn’t crush any leaves. On the underside, I pulled the two wire ends together and gave them a twist so they’d be secure.
Then I tucked the ends up under the base to help prevent the wire from scratching the surface of the furniture.
I was also sure to space the roses as equally as possible. For these 12-inch wreaths/candle rings, I used seven 2-inch roses.
For the final touch, I placed a flameless candle in a glass cylinder vase and then placed it in the center of the candle ring. (I highly recommend remote controlled flameless candles – much easier than manually turning the candles on and off.)
The Final Step
All finished! Now the only thing left to do was put them in place upstairs.
They turned out to be the perfect antidote to our gray winter days.
And they look sweet and romantic when lit up, especially at night.
It’s a fun, easy project you can complete in 30 minutes (or longer if you’re like me and need to fiddle with it till it’s just right).
I hope you enjoyed this decorating idea – I look forward to sharing another Valentine’s Day project soon!
