We have a secret for you. The key to enjoying the holidays is in being prepared. And being prepared means stocking the supplies you’re going to need before you need them!
It’s really that simple.
Okay, and being flexible when things don’t according to plan, but that’s another subject altogether (more on that here)!
Today, we’re focusing on simple ways to eliminate holiday frustration so we can spend more time enjoying this special time of year. That includes a list of must-have items to have on hand for creating holiday magic.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but it does touch on some of the most popular holiday essentials. Use it as a starting place to create your own personalized list!
The Basics
These items are the foundation of so many holiday projects. You may have more to add (and please do!), but these four make it to the tops of lists year after year.
1. Batteries
If you haven’t already done it, stock up on batteries now. Not just for kids’ toys, but also smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, battery-operated candles, TV remotes, etc.
2. Command Hooks
These are holiday staples in our house. Command hooks are super for hanging wreaths, swags, and lights without damaging your walls and doors – easy to use and removable! Be sure to get the ones designated for outdoors if you’ll be using them on the exterior of your house.
3. Craft Wire
Craft wire is an integral part of bow making and wreath decorating. It comes in different gauges (from thin to thick), so choose the most appropriate one for your project.
Wire that is 22 gauge is popular for wreath and garland making. Thicker gauges are more appropriate for jewelry making and crafts that require greater strength.
4. Zip Ties
I’m not sure how I survived the holidays without these. Zip ties are great for securing garlands to banisters and light posts. They also come in a variety of lengths with some rated for heavy duty use.
Cooking Essentials
Think about what you’re planning to cook or bake during the holiday season and check your pantry to be sure you have everything you need.
We’ve summarized some of our go-to items following #7 below.
5. Spices
Even if you have them on hand, check them for potency and replace if they’re past their prime.
6. Baking Staples
Time to stock up on flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cooking spray, etc.
7. Special Ingredients
If you have a favorite dish you make just during this time of year, check the recipe and then double check to be sure you have all the ingredients. Nothing is worse than getting part way into your prep only to realize you’re missing a key ingredient.
Some of Our Go-To Favorites:
Decorations
It’s always a good idea to check through the holiday decorations you plan to use before you’re actually ready to use them. Who hasn’t lost their mind when they plug in their Christmas tree lights to find half the strands are dead?
Some items to consider:
8. Candles
Whether traditional or battery-operated, you want to have enough on hand to meet your needs. We’re big fans of battery-operated versions for safety and convenience.
9. Light strands
Do they work? Are they the right color? Do you have enough for everything?
10. Ornaments
If you’re planning a themed tree, or if you’re just making a shift in overall style, check to be sure you have the type and number of ornaments you need. And don’t forget ornament hooks!
11. Ribbon
This one seems to get me every year. If you’re making bows for wreaths, garlands, swags, etc., be sure you have enough. Ribbon can sell out really fast and early in the season, so don’t wait on this one.
12. Tree stand(s)
Remember last year when you vowed to get a better stand for your Christmas tree? Well, now’s the time!
Finally, for my gift-giving friends, don’t forget wrapping paper and tape! It’s available everywhere, so grab a few rolls if you need them next time you’re out.
