We love July 4th at our house! It’s a chance to celebrate our freedom as Americans while enjoying the casual beauty of summer. Such a special day deserves to be commemorated with family and friends, great food, and, of course, charming décor.
To help make the most of your holiday festivities, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite Independence Day decorating ideas. Let the creative freedom ring!

Patriotic Door Decoration
One of the easiest ways to dress up your house for the holidays is by hanging a door decoration, like this grapevine basket. It’s filled with artificial flowers to keep it bright and colorful throughout the July 4th week. I added a white hydrangea, blue daisies, a big red mum, and small American flag. All materials are available from your local craft store (or on Amazon), making it something super easy to do.
Outdoor Picnic
Keep your celebration low maintenance but high style with this cute outdoor setup. If you’re like Yvonne at StoneGable and have a collection of red, white, and blue anything (dinnerware, serving plates, textiles, glassware, etc.), now is the time to put it to use!
Fabrics showcasing buffalo checks, stars, and stripes mix with a wicker serving tray and vintage metal basket for relaxed vibe. Sew a pocket onto your placemats for a handy silverware holder and keep everything within arm’s reach for guests. Let the celebration begin!
Simple Touches
Décor needn’t be elaborate to have an impact. Check out this tabletop look from the folks at White and Wood Grain. A vintage glass jug with a stem of faux white flowers and a couple of small American flags makes a lovely statement. Position several throughout the house for a complete look. How easy is that?
Lakeside Celebration
Being on the coast of Maine, I’m drawn to décor that involves the water. This spread from White Arrows Home makes use of everyday items to create a charming Fourth of July on the dock. A wood pallet stands in for a table and cushions offer soft seating. Blue lanterns, a picnic basket, potted geraniums, and flags complete the look.
Looking to amp the July 4th feel? Add a galvanized bucket filled with boxes of sparklers. They make for cute décor during the day and you get to light them up at night. Form and function!
Cute & Casual Tablescape
So simple, yet so perfect. A striped runner in muted shades of red, white, and blue serves as the foundation for this table setting that is one of my favorites. A hyacinth charger topped with a red and white plate is complemented with a red, white, and blue checked napkin and small flag. A red and white striped ceramic vase holds Hosta leaves, hydrangea, and a red star pick. Just beautiful. Thank you to the team at Pizzazzerie for this inspired look!
Nautical Tablescape
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I love a good tablescape and this one from Home is Where the Boat Is doesn’t disappoint! A seersucker tablecloth, red, white, and blue plates, blue wine glasses, striped napkins, tiny pinwheels, and American flags complete the patriotic color scheme. Wicker serving trays make unique chargers while adding texture, and wood buoys and glass floats combine to create a nautical centerpiece. Swap out some of the July 4th accents and you have a look that can be used all summer. Brilliant.
Picnic Basket Centerpiece
While there is a lot of fun stuff going on in this picture (like the boxed sparklers in the toy boats), it’s the centerpiece I’m really loving. That patriotic gingham print on a metal picnic basket could not be cuter. Filled with summertime blooms and flags, it will make you want to put your hand over your heart!
Thanks again to Mary at Home is Where the Boat Is for another great idea.
Garden Touches
What better way to celebrate a summertime holiday than by bringing the garden to the party. Terra cotta pots filled with white impatiens lend an organic feel to this adorable, but not-too-sweet, table from The Preppy Hostess. We also love the checked tablecloth, patriotic runner, and wicker chargers.
Other annual varieties to consider: geraniums and petunias. Both come in brilliant shades of red and white (you can even get very close to dark blue with petunias). Bonus: after the holiday, you can transplant them into a garden bed or larger outdoor pot to keep the show going all summer long.
Canning Jar Centerpiece
Create a dramatic centerpiece using glass canning jars like Kate at Southern Home & Hospitality. Ball jars in light blue are filled with white hydrangeas and small American flags. Arrange them on a runner and presto, your centerpiece is ready. A striped runner visually anchors the centerpiece to the table and pops against a red and white checked tablecloth.
Pretty Porch Décor
Summer days are made for relaxing on the porch, and the Fourth of July is no exception. Pillows in patriotic motifs and colors, along with flags and bunting create an inviting spot to sit, sip, and celebrate.
Thanks again to White Arrows Home for the festive look!
Cupcake Centerpiece
What’s not to love about yummy red velvet cupcakes decorated like sailboats? I’m definitely recreating this idea from Mary at Home is Where the Boat Is. Bake your treats in flag-themed cupcake holders and decorate with red, white, and blue sprinkles. Top them off with sails made from scrapbook paper squares (folded into triangles) affixed to bamboo knot picks.
Coastal Vibes
Stripes, watery-colored fabrics, and simple white plates are accented with a string of wood beads and glass lanterns in this coastal table setting from Taryn Whiteaker. Pops of red from vases of geraniums and signal flags on the table reinforce the Independence Day theme. It’s the sort of table that makes you want to sit, relax, and breathe in the salty air.
