It’s not unusual for vacationers to Maine to fall in love with the state, buy a ramshackle cottage, fix it up, and relocate here permanently. Such was the case with the owners of this lovely seaside sanctuary on the Pemaquid Peninsula.
Following many summer vacations, the owners decided it was time to buy a place of their own. What they found was a small cottage in poor shape in a stunning location – a diamond in the rough.
Literally set on the rocks above Muscongus Bay, the derelict structure was brought back to life and expanded to accommodate a new guest bathroom and a slightly larger guest bedroom. At just 1,000 square feet, it’s a laid back, cozy space filled with Maine antiques and treasures.
The owners furnished the cottage with finds from local shops. Vintage paintings and decorative objects depicting coastal life give the space a lived-in feel. Whitewashed bead board walls reach high into what used to be the attic, while painted hardwood floors covered in soft rugs amp the cottage vibe,
The cottage feel extends to the small but functional kitchen, which offers incredible views of the ocean beyond. Colorful signal flags displayed just outside the windows enhance the seagoing nature of the property. Also in the kitchen, bead board makes another appearance on the cabinets, while a mix of blue and white accents brings a much-needed pop of color to the space.
Just off the kitchen, the owners carved out space for a small mudroom. We love the aqua paint on the bench and bead board wainscoting, along with the hooks for hats, coats, and leashes (we’re always thinking of our pets!). A nearby painted chest of drawers and shelving create additional storage, while a random assortment of books, architectural objects, and artwork give the utilitarian spot a warm feel.
Inside the primary bedroom, texture abounds with painted wood, wicker, bead board, and soft fabrics coming together effortlessly. More antique finds, like the collection of cobalt blue bottles lining the windowsill, continue the laid back aesthetic. A skylight above the bed – one of several in the house – ensures ample sunlight in this happy place.
If you ask us, outside is where the real magic happens. Step outside the charming screen door and follow a flagstone path through lush gardens the owners incorporated during their renovation.
Plantings of hostas, hydrangea, creeping jenny, ferns, rugosa roses, and more mingle with garden sculptures. The winding path encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the beauty of this natural environment.
At the end of the path, a granite bench set on a stone terrace is the perfect spot to escape and take in the scenery. What an amazing way to begin or end a day in Maine!
This charming seaside cottage proves a house doesn’t need to be large to be amazing. It’s a wonderful example of coastal life in Maine.
