5 Amazing Maine-Made Companies to Shop Today

When people think of Maine-made goods, they often think of L.L. Bean, or maybe Tom’s of Maine or Burt’s Bees (the latter got it’s start in Maine, but is actually made in North Carolina). And while I am definitely a fan of each of those, I wanted to share some names you may not be familiar with.

We’re lucky to be home to some really cool brands and the five picks included in this post represent the hard working spirit that embodies being a Mainer. All are true artisans with a commitment to their crafts, whether that’s harvesting Maine sea salt, making candy, or designing beautiful handbags from upcycled materials. These folks work hard while respecting traditions and the environment.

It’s that ethic that makes them special. What a privilege to buy quality goods made in the USA by people who go the extra mile to ensure an outstanding customer experience. Supporting them is good not only for the local community, but for the country, as well. And the products are fantastic, so everyone wins!

Everything included here is available on Amazon, making it extra convenient for shoppers. You can also purchase directly from each company’s website, where they often have a wider selection of goods.

Treat yourself to one or more of these amazing products, or buy one as a special gift. They’re sure to please and you’ll get to experience a little bit of Maine life in the process!

1. Sea Bags of Maine

A local favorite, Sea Bags of Maine creates beautiful totes, wristlets, handbags, and more made from upcycled sail cloth. Durable and classic, these bags are designed to last a lifetime. They come in lots of different prints and styles, including many one-of-a-kind options. The company also makes outdoor furniture and home accessories – like the beverage tote below – with the same “recycle and reuse” philosophy that got them started.

2. Fletchers’ Mill

Around since 1971, Fletchers’ Mill combines sustainability and artistry to make gorgeous salt and pepper mills and shakers, rolling pins, and other kitchen tools. They employ around 100 dedicated employees driven to create stunning, eco-friendly products. I’m particularly fond of the mills, which are like works of art for the kitchen. Bonus: they come in a variety of styles and colors, too.

3. Maine Needham Company

For the unindoctrinated, a Needham is a uniquely-Maine candy made with a combination of coconut and potato (yep, potato) that is covered in chocolate. With origins dating back about 150 years, there’s a reason this confection has been around so long. The Maine Needham Company is continuing the tradition of making these sweet treats, offering a variety of flavors as well as gift crates and samplers.

4. Belted Cow Company

There’s something about a quality, handcrafted belt, and the ones from the Belted Cow Company are a step above. The designs are super cute, too. You can get a variety of prints on cotton webbing, like flags, lobsters, dogs, and flowers. They also make leather options, and even dog collars, so Rover can sport some style, too.

5. Maine Sea Salt Company

Hand harvested in Down East Maine, this sea salt is as pure as it gets. The Maine Sea Salt Company uses solar evaporation techniques and avoids the addition of iodine and anti-caking agents. It’s packed by hand, certified Kosher, and comes in small and bulk quantities. A must for any home chef!
